(...) Lately the profile of Ediciones Universal has changed for the better, thanks to the work of Luis García Fesquet, who has been responsible for the design of most of the book covers for the publishing house for the past several years.
(…) Fresquet is of the opinion that to produce a good cover “is important to have read the book; that leads him to find an image that reflects the essence of the story, making it as attractive as possible, to motivate the reader to read the book.”
Luis García Fresquet began his career at the age of fourteen, working for newspapers in Havana. Later he studied Graphic Design and Journalism in the Cuban capital, the city where he was born. He worked in various publications as a cartoonist, Graphic Designer and/or Art Director, until he left the country and established himself in Spain. While in Spain, he worked as Art Director for the “Próximo” magazine, directed by Carlos Alberto Montaner.
In a new phase of his life in Miami, Florida (…), he began his relationship with Ediciones Universal almost as soon as he arrived (…). “I believe I have, in a modest way, established a design profile in this publishing house, considered one of the most important ones in the Spanish language in the USA…, and has been able to keep alive the Cuban culture in the Cuban exile community”, explains García Fresquet. Even though he had some family members who studied art in the San Alejandro Art Academy in Havana, and made a career out of it, his artistic vocation was not the result of academic studies- his natural talent was responsible for it. His success is the result of hard work in designing and a spirit of dedication to his trade.
The work of this Cuban Graphic Designer is so valuable and has received so much praise that today it’s hard to imagine any book published by Ediciones Universal not having the Cover credit identified with the name Luis García Fresquet.
Fresquet has received numerous awards for his designs, among them, the Premio Nacional de Diseño Gráfico, in Havana, several years before residing in Spain.
